We are a large family – from happy vegans to happy carnivores and many things in-between. It makes for interesting meals and even more interesting conversations! As a farming family we understand a huge range of ways of being in the world. We have never adopted the thinking and practices of agribusiness be that for carnivores or vegans. So there are important questions to consider no matter where we stand on the spectrum of food politics.
Years ago we were asked to teach at a summer camp about food sovereignty to an interesting mix of rural and urban children. The key thing we asked them to do was to ask themselves:
What am I eating? Where does it come from? Most families were not reading labels or considering these things. If food is coming from a continent away is that better for the planet than food grown locally? How does that impact a communities ability to feed itself? Another key question: what do I need to be well? It may differ body to body and a family learns to respect not all bodies are the same. We find our “A” blood types lean to be vegetarian where our “O” blood types lean to a need for meat proteins. Interesting!
Recently at the markets from questions we are asked there is concern we are raising a generation that does not know how to cook from scratch with food that is in front of them. So much prepackaged goods, so easy to access. You may have heard the adage “if your Grandma can’t pronounce it, maybe you shouldn’t eat it”. Well this Grandma can pronounce a number of things you probably shouldn’t eat so the better advice is: What am I eating? Where does it come from?
