In Your Bin October 7th: Peppers!
Well it’s that time of the year when we start scanning the weather app every night for that first frost, cover the crops with row cover we are protecting for the coming late fall and winter months, and say goodbye to some of our fair weather friends. As you may deduce by your bin contents this week one of those fair weather friends is peppers! Although we usually cover our pepper plants late into October, this year due to the high temperatures and drought conditions earlier in the summer when fruit was setting we are now leaving the plant to the mercy of the falls first killing frost this week. This means stripping the plants of any harvestable fruit before the frost can damage it and leave it unharvestable. Hence the abundance and variety of peppers in the bin this week!
One unusual pepper in your bin started its journey to get here all the way from the warm, sunny climate of Brazil. This pepper came to us from our good friend Tony at Wheelbarrow Farm. Tony came across this unique pepper on a farm he was volunteering on traveling through Brazil in the off season. With its bright orange skin, unique fruity and floral flavor mixed with a slight mild heat he knew it was something he just had to share with his customers and farming friends. So Tony saved some seeds and began to grow them out back home in Ontario. Now, after a couple of years of saving seed and selecting the best plants he has enough seeds and fruit to share with his food and farming community. We hope you enjoy this unique pepper! I enjoyed them best by frying them like shishitos then chilling in the fridge for a couple hours, delicious! We don’t know the official name for this pepper. We have simply called it Pedros Sweet Hot, in honour of Pedro whose farm Tony found it on!
Also, we are sending along a recipe that a market customer buys quantities of fennel for. Her family says it is the most delicious recipe for fennel!
