What is a CSA? We often get asked this question and it can be answered simply:
Community Supported Agriculture
But there is also another way to define the acronym:
Committed: Customers are making a wonderful commitment to welcome and accept seasonal vegetables in their bin week to week, even if they are not familiar with, or even like some of those vegetables! Farmers are making the commitment to grow, harvest and prepare the vegetables for the bins even when the going gets tough and Mother Nature throws yet another curve ball at them.
Sustainable: CSAs keep farmers farming. This means food is grown locally and not shipped in from out of province or even out of the country. It also means food is grown, not manufactured and prepackaged.
Agriculture: Let’s look at this word in a new way: Agri Culture
“Culture is the shared set of beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that characterize a group of
society. It acts as a framework for how we perceive the world”. The culture around farming values the land, values the work of growing food, values the wonder of seeds becoming crops, becoming food on our tables.
