Are cilantro and coriander the same thing?! Well, yes and no. They are the same plant but different and distinct parts of that plant. In North America we are familiar with the leafy green part which you have in your bin today as cilantro, and coriander as the seed portion of the plant. There is a long history of this plant in Europe and the Middle East particularly the seed portion for its use to preserve meat. This seed portion, coriander, is the base of most curry powders. It is interesting to note that the leafy green portion, cilantro, is high in vitamins and low in minerals while the coriander seed is high in mineral content and low in vitamins. Sometimes cilantro is confused with parsley so this explains one reason why we leave the root portion on the plant to note the difference!
